Eye Conditions

CATARACTS

If you have a cataract, your lens has become cloudy. It is like looking through a foggy or dusty car windshield. Things look blurry, hazy or less colorful with a cataract. Cataract surgery involves removing the cloudy lens of the eye and replacing it with an intraocular lens implant, (IOL). Dr. Schmidt specializes in cataract surgery and offers IOL options so you may select the right lens for your vision needs. He has performed over 7000 surgeries since beginning his career in 1998.

DRY EYE

Dry eye occurs when people do not make enough tears or tears of a good quality. The tear film is made of three layers: the oil layer, the aqueous layer, and the mucin layer. Dysfunction in any of these three layers can cause dry eye. Our doctors will perform slit lamp exam, looking at the eyelid margins and surface of the eye. Sometimes, a dye called fluorescein may be used to help look for dry spots and rapid tear evaporation. A Schirmer’s test may also be performed. Your dry eye may be treated with artificial tears, punctal plugs, prescription drops, dietary modifications and supplements and possible environmental modifications.

FLASHES AND FLOATERS

Floaters occur when little clumps form in the vitreous, the gel that fills the back of the eye. Flashes occur when the vitreous, which is attached at certain points to the retina, pulls on the retina, the neural tissue in the back of the eye that allows us to see. Floaters look like specks or strands in the vision that float as your eye moves. Flashes look like lightning bolts or flashing lights, usually in the peripheral vision, and can occur intermittently for weeks. Our doctors will perform a complete dilated eye exam with a thorough examination of the retina to check for tears or holes. Our doctors will recommend appropriate treatment.

Dr. Schmidt is caring and professional.  When I needed cataract surgery he was strongly recommended by my primary care doctor.  I’m happy to report my cataract surgery went smoothly and my vision is as clear as ever.  I can see the scoreboard at US Cellular without glasses but more importantly, I can call balls & strikes as good as the umps!
